Somalia: IS threatens attacks during year-end holiday period

IS-affiliated fighters release first video on December 25 threatening attacks during end of the year holiday period

Warning

Event

On Monday, December 25, Islamic State (IS)-affiliated fighters in Somalia released a video urging IS supporters to attack revelers during the end-of-year holiday season. The video called on supporters to attack areas where large crowds may gather, such as churches and markets. According to security sources, the video is the first to be released by IS-affiliated fighters in Somalia.

Context

The number of IS-affiliated fighters in Somalia is small, but has grown in recent months. According to security sources, a small contingent of pro-IS militants are based in the Golis Mountain area east of Bosaso.

Advice

Due to the high threat of terrorism, individuals present throughout the country are advised remain vigilant around public venues (markets, places of worship, schools, bars, areas where broadcasts of sports competitions are displayed, etc.) as well as security forces and governmental buildings, which are frequently targeted by attacks and suicide bombings. Because of extremely poor security conditions, travel should only be considered with appropriate security precautions in place.
