Warning

Event

A suicide bomb attack took place before 08:00 (local time) on Monday, December 25, near the Sash Darak area of Kabul. The blast reportedly occurred near the entrance to the National Directorate for Security (NDS) and resulted in the deaths of at least five civilians. Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack in an online statement. Security forces have closed off the area surrounding the explosion, and localized road closures as well as an increased security presence should be expected.

Context

The Sash Darak area is also near the US Embassy and NATO headquarters. Security across the Afghan capital was stepped up in recent weeks in anticipation of an increased terrorist threat associated with the end-of-year holidays.

Advice

Individuals present in Kabul are advised to avoid the area surrounding Monday's explosion until security forces have contained the situation. Due to major security concerns, individuals throughout Afghanistan are urged to keep a safe distance from large gatherings, military convoys, government buildings, and crowded urban areas. Many Western governments advise their citizens against travel to Afghanistan due to the high threat of kidnapping and terrorism, including frequent attacks against security forces, local civilians and politicians, and individuals working in the humanitarian and reconstruction fields. Travel to the country should only be undertaken with proper security protocols in place.
