Philippines: Ferry capsizes in Quezon province Dec. 21

Event

The Philippines are currently experiencing poor weather conditions due to Tropical Storm Tembin (known as "Vinta" in the Philippines). At approximately 11:00 (local time) on Thursday, December 21, a ferry transporting 251 passengers sunk between Dinahican (Quezon province) and the island of Polilio. Dozens of passengers reportedly died and many more are still missing. According to a spokesperson from the Philippine coast guard, hazardous sea conditions caused by the storm were likely responsible for the accident.

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly strike the Philippines during the monsoon season - which spans from November to April in the northeast, and from May to October in the southwest. On average, roughly 20 typhoons and tropical storms hit the country each year.

Caution is recommended when traveling on passenger ferries or speedboats. It is advised to avoid traveling on vessels that are clearly overloaded and/or in poor condition. Make sure life jackets are available before boarding.
