Opposition leader Khalifa Sall’s trial to take place on December 14; protests by his supporters expected in the coming days

Warning

Event

The jailed opposition leader Khalifa Sall - a member of the National Assembly and the mayor of the capital Dakar - will be tried on Thursday, December 14, on charges of embezzling state funds. A gathering by supporters of Sall is planned in front of the Dakar Court during his trial. An increased security presence should be expected surrounding the court. Further protests by Sall's supporters are likely in the capital to demand his release in the lead-up to and following December 14.

Context

Sall is the leader of the opposition coalition Manko Taxawu Senegal (MTS). He has been in prison since March but was nevertheless elected to the parliament in July, without being able to take his seat. On November 25, the National Assembly lifted its parliamentary immunity to allow Sall's trial to proceed, prompting his supporters to protest in front of the National Assembly in Dakar.

Advice

Individuals in Dakar and across the country are advised to remain vigilant, monitor the situation via local media, and avoid any form of public demonstration or public gathering due to the risk of violence.
