United States: NYC’s Port Authority reopens following attack Dec. 11 /update 2

The Port Authority bus terminal in New York City reopened at around 09:45 (local time) on Monday, December 11. It had been briefly closed following an explosion that took place earlier in the morning. Transportation authorities are advising customers to confirm any travel reservations with bus carriers. Additionally, persistent delays are expected on subway and city bus services throughout the day; the 42nd Street/Port Authority-Bus Terminal and Times Square-42nd Street subway stations remain closed as of 10:15. Police continue to investigate the explosion, which has been classified as an attempted terrorist attack. According to police officials, a 27-year-old suspect, who was injured in the explosion, has been detained. Three other people were also reportedly injured.

Context

Security officials in New York City remain on high alert following a series of high-profile attacks in major European and American cities in recent years perpetrated by Islamic State (IS)-inspired militants. On October 31, a car ramming attack in New York City killed eight and injured at least 12 others. The attacker was reportedly inspired by IS attacks in Europe.

At around 07:20, a suspected pipe bomb exploded in an underground passageway of the Port Authority transportation hub.
