Anti-corruption protests to be held in San Cristóbal and Mao on Sunday, November 5

The anti-corruption group Marcha Verde (Green March) has called for protests to take place on Sunday, November 5, in San Cristóbal and Mao. In both cities, marches will begin at 10:00 (local time). Demonstrators will gather at Puerta de la Hacienda in San Cristóbal, and at the intersection of Avenida Olímpica and Santo Rodríguez in Mao. The demonstrations will likely remain non-violent but clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

Marcha Verde has organized regular demonstrations across the country over the past year to demand an end to impunity and widespread government corruption. There has been growing public outcry over recent revelations of more than a decade of allegedly corrupt government contracts and bribery linked with the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
