Philippines: Tropical Depression Ramil strikes November 1-2

Tropical Depression Ramil brings moderate rains and wind to multiple islands including Luzon; isolated flooding and landslides possible

Warning

Event

As of 05:00 (local time) on Thursday, November 2, Tropical Depression Ramil was located over the West Philippine Sea, 230 km (145 mi) south of Coron, Palawan province with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph (35 mph). Forecasts for Thursday anticipate moderate rains and thunderstorms in Mindoro, Palawan, Batangas, and Luzon (including Manila), with a risk of flooding and landslides in mountainous areas. The storm is set to leave the area by Thursday evening.

Context

Tropical Depression Ramil caused heavy flooding and landslides in isolated villages in Southern Tagalog and Bicol provinces on November 1. The storm also caused multiple cancelations for flights between Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL), Virac Airport (VRC), and Tuguegarao Airport (TUG) due to heavy winds. Passengers were accommodated on later flights. Furthermore, at least two people were reported missing and five people were reported injured in Palawan and Occidental Mindoro provinces.

Advice

Individuals present in the Philippines are advised to keep abreast of weather alerts, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to all advice issued by the local authorities.

In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Finally, because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, wear boots and try to avoid any contact with the water. All items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected and foodstuffs discarded.
