Officials have significantly increased security measures in the capital city of Beijing during the Chinese Communist Party Congress, which is being held from Wednesday, October 18, through Saturday, October 28. According to media reports, an additional 650,000 security personnel have been deployed in the capital for the meeting. Additional police officers are being stationed on public transportation and will carry out security scans on passengers and their bags. Media sources also reported that many restaurants, bars, and night clubs have been closed in downtown Beijing, and a number of concerts were canceled due to the heightened security measures. Drones and hot air balloons have also been banned in the capital and deliveries of various items, including liquids, powders, pastes, knives, and toy guns, are temporarily suspended until the Congress finishes. Expect significant transportation delays in the coming days due to the heightened security, particularly during rush hour.

Context

This is the 19th Chinese Community Party Congress and more than 2000 delegates are expected to attend the event. The congress is held once every five years and is used to elect party leaders and set national policies. Current President Xi Jinping is expected to be elected for another five-year term and further consolidate his power.
