Cameroon: Surge in Islamist violence in north

Increase in suspected Boko Haram attacks in north

Warning

Event

Authorities in Cameroon have reported an increase in violence in the north, allegedly attributed to the militant group Boko Haram. Suicide bombers attacked two border towns and a military base in Mora and Kolofata in early June, as part of a string of recent attacks in the border area. One soldier was reportedly killed in the attacks, and several wounded.

Further attacks are possible in the coming days.

Context

The Far North region of Cameroon, especially along the border with Nigeria, regularly experiences significant violence attributed to Boko Haram. While the group's main stronghold is in Nigeria, the group has been carrying out attacks in Cameroon since 2013.

Advice

Individuals in Cameroon are advised to monitor the situation and adhere to instructions issued by authorities. Some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to the Far North region as well as areas bordering Nigeria, Chad, and the Central African Republic; travel to these areas should only be considered with appropriate security protocols in place.
