As of the early afternoon of April 30, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) is continuing its response to an apparent underground explosion that took place during the mid-morning in the vicinity of the intersection of Brooklyn Avenue and Empire Boulevard. The blast reportedly threw three manhole covers into the air and expelled smoke in nearby areas. Authorities have evacuated several buildings near the scene and are warning the public to avoid the impact area due to elevated levels of carbon monoxide. There have as yet been no reports of injuries.

Localized road closures and transport disruptions will likely continue over the coming hours.
