New Zealand: Networkwide rail disruptions to occur in Wellington Region, North Island, into early May due to repair works

Networkwide railway disruptions likely in Wellington Region, New Zealand, into early May due to planned maintenance.

Warning

Event

Rail disruptions are likely across the Wellington Region, North Island, into at least early May. KiwiRail services into and out of Wellington will operate slowly and on a reduced schedule to facilitate the repair of safety equipment. Lines mostly affected include Hutt Valley, Kapiti, and Wairarapa. The company will provide replacement bus services in several areas, such as the Melling Line between Melling and Petone. Long-distance passenger services, including Capital Connection and Northern Explorer, will also be impacted. While KiwiRail estimates repair works may be completed by May 5, operational delays may occur.

Lingering disruptions may occur after the maintenance concludes as operators reposition rolling stock. Available rail services will likely experience crowding; demand for alternative means of transport will probably be higher. Increased traffic congestion is likely as persons who would normally use Wellington's rail network resort to driving their personal vehicles.

Advice

Consider using alternative transport for time-sensitive travel during the announced maintenance period. Allow extra time to reach destinations due to increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative transportation.
