Informational

Event

Unionized electricity workers in Telangana plan to stage a statewide strike from April 25 over various demands, including a salary hike. Participating unions include the Telangana Vidyut Employee’s Union (TVEU) and the ITEHAD Electricity Contract Employees Union; organizers claim over 20,000 workers will join the action. Other unions had called off a related strike scheduled for April 17 due to differences within the coalition. Limited disruptions to power services are possible, especially if the walkout is prolonged, or receives support from other unions. Union leaders may withdraw the action at short notice if negotiations with government officials succeed.

Commercial and transport disruptions are possible in areas affected by power outages. Businesses without backup generators may have to suspend operations. Traffic lights may not function, resulting in traffic disruptions, and limited public trains that rely on power may be affected. The power outage may also prompt brief telecommunication disruptions and interruptions to electronic security and water filtration systems.

While activists have not announced any plans for demonstrations, strike participants will probably hold protests. Previous rallies have seen high participation, with over 30,000 employees demonstrating in Hyderabad on March 24. Police will likely deploy to protest sites; popular gathering sites include electricity board office in Hyderabad called Vidyut Soudha, government buildings, public squares in city centers, and main thoroughfares. Police may ban gatherings, or disperse disruptive crowds, possibly leading to clashes. Well-attended gatherings may prompt localized transport disruptions, particularly if workers block or march on roads.

Advice

Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors during outages. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working, including after power resumes. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled. Avoid any protests due to possible violence. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
