  • Time Frame: Indefinite
  • Impact: Ground transport disruptions; cargo delivery delays; possible protests

Summary
Logistics workers at Benapole Land Port, the busiest border crossing for trade between India and Bangladesh, launched an indefinite work stoppage July 2. Strike supporters are demanding Indian officials allow imports from Bangladesh to India through the facility; trade has been disrupted due to restrictions prompted by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Workers began refusing to process some shipments from India to Bangladesh through the facility from July 1 before blocking all shipments from July 2. Organizers say the work stoppage will continue until authorities grant their demands.

Cross-border logistical and transport disruptions will likely continue for the duration of the labor action. Striking workers may also stage protests near the border crossing. Clashes are possible if police attempt to clear protesters by force.

Advice
Confirm shipments and ground transport reservations through the Benapole border crossing. Arrange alternative transport as necessary. Prepare for increased congestion at alternative border crossings. Avoid all protests as a precaution.
