Summary
Activists associated with the organization ReOpen VA plan to hold a protest in Richmond, Va., May 6, to demand that authorities lift some of the business restrictions in place due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and which were extended until May 15. Demonstrators intend to remain inside their vehicles and drive, starting at 1300, from West Broad Street to 14th Street, then Main Street, followed by 9th Street and end on West Broad Street.

State Senator Amanda Chase, who is running for governor in 2021, announced that she supports the protest and encouraged people to participate. Hundreds of people will likely participate in the demonstration, which may lead to transport and business disruptions throughout Richmond. Heightened security is likely, especially around the State Capitol. Clashes are unlikely, but some skirmishes cannot be ruled out.

Background and Analysis
Protests demanding state authorities to lift business restrictions have been occurring in multiple US states since mid-April, due to the measures most governors have put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19. Most of the demonstrations have not caused major disruptions. Similar protests are likely to continue happening in state capitals in the coming days and weeks as some restrictions are extended.
