Summary
Traders at traditional markets in Karachi are likely to stage additional protests in the coming days, following rallies that took place May 13. Traders protested at Zainab Market after authorities sealed shops due to alleged violations of social distancing regulations, which officials implemented to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Officials also sealed shops at nearby traditional retail facilities, namely Victoria Market, International Market, and Gul Plaza. Dozens to hundreds of protesters may gather at sealed marketplaces to demand their reopening.

Authorities will continue to deploy to enforce business closures and monitor protests in the affected areas. Police could enforce traffic restrictions to prevent protesters from gathering. Security measures and protests are especially likely to prompt disruptions along sections on Abdullah Haroon Road and adjacent streets. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible during any additional rallies.

Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Allow additional time for ground transport in the affected areas. Leave the area immediately if an unruly mob forms nearby, and seek shelter in a secure location. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
