Summary
Healthcare workers affiliated with the Israeli National Association of Nurses (NAN) plan to launch an indefinite nationwide strike beginning July 20. Nurses will reportedly only work on an emergency basis, although the parameters of what constitutes an emergency were not specified. The strike is in protest of personnel shortages that have worsened amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. NAN chairperson Ilana Cohen stated that the strike is being called out of national responsibility to stop the collapse of the nursing system and save lives.

Union representatives met with the Health Ministry on July 13 in an unsuccessful attempt to avert the strike. Unless the strike is averted in the coming days, disruptions to medical services throughout Israel are almost certain. The labor action will extend to hospitals, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and other medical institutions.

Advice
Confirm all appointments at medical facilities for the duration of the strike. Prepare for disruptions in medical services, including delays at hospitals. Call in advance if possible, as conditions will likely vary at different facilities. Avoid any strike-related protests that may materialize. Allow additional time for travel near likely gathering sites.
