  • Location(s): Five Star Chowrangi, Karachi (map)
  • Time/Date: 1500 May 5
  • Impact: Increased security, localized transport disruptions; possible clashes

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party has announced a demonstration with members of trade unions at Karachi's Five Star Chowrangi traffic intersection, 1500 May 5. Organizers are demanding relaxation of business restrictions introduced by the Sindh government to curb the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19); officials are permitting only essential and emergency services to function as of May 5. Hundreds of participants may gather at the venue and possibly hold street marches or enforce roadblocks.

Enhanced security measures such as police deployment and road closures are probable in the vicinity until the demonstration ends; the Sher Shah Suri Road is most likely to be affected. Essential businesses operating in the area such as supermarkets and pharmacies may close in case of violence. Clashes may break out if police disperse or move crowds forcibly.

Avoid the demonstration due to possible clashes. Do not navigate any roadblocks as violence is possible. Allow additional driving time in central Karachi if traveling for essential purposes. Seek updated information from trusted local sources on road conditions and ensure police permission before traveling in the area. Leave the area immediately if an unruly mob forms nearby, and seek shelter in a secure location. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
