Summary
The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) is planning to hold a protest at Babar Mahal in Kathmandu July 3 to demand greater job security and protection of journalists’ rights. Members of the FNJ believe that journalists have been neglected and treated poorly during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Organizers have not announced a starting time for the protest. The demonstration will likely attract between dozens and a few hundred people.

Security personnel will likely deploy to the protest. Police will probably try to break up the demonstration if it contravenes COVID-19 gathering size restrictions. Security forces may cordon off the protest area, potentially causing localized transport disruptions. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, especially if security forces attempt to disperse protesters.

Advice
Avoid all protests due to the possibility of clashes. If violence breaks out nearby, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure non-government building. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Allow additional travel time near demonstration sites.
