  • Impact: Increased security, localized disruptions

Summary
Event industry business owners and their supporters plan to demonstrate in Berlin 1200-1800 Sept. 9. Organizers are calling for financial support from the government amid coronavirus disease (COVID-19) measures that prohibit many of their businesses from fully operating. The demonstration will consist of a protest march and a vehicular go-slow protest. The protest march will proceed from Alexanderplatz to Brandenburg Gate, while the go-slow protest will commence at Olympischer Platz and converge with the march at Brandenburg Gate. Several thousand people could attend.

Police will likely deploy to monitor the gatherings. The demonstration and associated security measures may prompt localized disruptions. Current COVID-19 measures in Germany include the mandatory use of facemasks in crowded spaces and strict social distancing; police may move protesters on if they are deemed to be in breach of these restrictions. Accordingly, isolated scuffles between police and protesters are possible.

Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security forces and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check public transport schedules and traffic conditions for disruptions. Allow extra time for travel in Berlin Sept. 9.
