  • Event: Protest
  • Location(s): Bari (map)
  • Start Time/Date: 1000 May 11
  • Impact: Likely increased security, localized disruptions; possible low-level violence

Summary
Activists plan to protest against measures put in place to counter the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Bari May 11. Activists from local business organizations plan to gather from 1000 in Piazza Liberte and the adjacent Piazza Prefettura to demand the government ease restrictions and provide more financial assistance to struggling businesses. Organizers have stated that up to 2200 people may attend the demonstration, and are encouraging participants to practice social distancing.

Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the protest. Increased security measures could prompt localized traffic and public transport disruptions, especially on Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Given that all demonstrations remained banned under regulations to limit the spread of COVID-19, police may move to disperse protesters; isolated scuffles between police and protesters are possible, particularly if the latter do not abide by social distancing regulations or refuse orders to disperse. Bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any confrontations.

Advice
Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to minimize the impact of any disruptions. Allow additional travel time if transiting the impact area May 11. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Adhere to all health measures currently in place.
