Summary
Teachers, parents, and activists plan to stage a vehicle protest in downtown Austin July 18 to denounce what they argue is the state's unsafe plan to reopen schools during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Participants will gather in their vehicles in parking lots on Colorado Street at 1000, before driving in caravan around the Texas Capitol building and the Texas Education Agency building via Guadeloupe Street, 11th Street, Trinity Street, and Martin Luther King Boulevard. Organizers have indicated that participants will continue driving this route through at least 1200 before staging a sit-in protest on the north Capitol grounds through 1400. Attendance is likely to be in the thousands.

Additional police will likely deploy to monitor and facilitate the protest. The caravan protest and related security measures are likely to result in significant road transport disruptions around the Texas Capitol building for the duration of the protest. The event is likely to pass peacefully, though isolated clashes cannot be ruled out.

Advice
If possible, avoid the area around the Texas Capitol building during the protest period as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Allow extra time to reach destinations in downtown Austin July 18.
