Members and supporters of several organizations, including Reopen Virginia, plan to hold a protest at Virginia Capitol Square in Richmond, Virginia, starting 1130 April 16. Activists are demanding Governor Ralph Northam lift restrictions on business operations and end the stay-at-home order from May 1. Authorities in Virginia recently extended orders to keep nonessential businesses closed through at least May 8, while the stay-at-home order is in place through June 10, due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Hundreds are likely to participate in the demonstration. Security personnel may order demonstrators to disband as they will likely violate the state's ban on gatherings. While widespread clashes are unlikely, skirmishes are possible. Similar protests have taken place in recent days in North Carolina and Michigan without major incident.
Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating in Richmond April 16. Heed the recommendations of authorities. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location.
