Summary
Activists plan to stage protests in several cities throughout Australia Sept. 5 to denounce restrictive measures related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Authorities have warned that such demonstrations are illegal in certain locations due to COVID-19-related restrictions on public gatherings; however, some groups plan to move ahead with their protests in defiance of existing directives. Organizers have published some event times and locations in advance; however, details for other gatherings will only be announced immediately before the rallies begin.

As of early Sept. 2, the following intended rally locations and start times have been announced:

  • Adelaide: Intersection of Rundle Street and East Terrace, 1200

  • Brisbane: City Botanic Gardens, 1300

  • Canberra: Old Parliament House, 1200

  • Hobart: Parliament House, 1200

  • Melbourne: Shrine of Remembrance, 1100

  • Perth: Parliament House, 1100

  • Sydney: Cathy Freeman Park, 1400

Rally times and locations may change at short notice. Attendance in the intended protests will likely vary considerably by location.

Police will deploy to possible protest venues as a precaution. Authorities are likely to impose controls in some areas to prevent protesters from gathering. Police could also act quickly to disperse and arrest participants. Security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, could prompt localized traffic congestion and public transport disruptions. Clashes between police and protesters are possible.

Advice
Avoid the announced rally locations as a precaution. Plan for localized traffic and business disruptions around protest sites. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
