Authorities imposed strict movement and business restrictions in Jia County, Henan Province, starting March 31 to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the area after authorities discovered that at least two medical personal were asymptomatic carriers of the virus. Nonessential businesses have been closed. Residents of the county need to receive approval to leave their homes and are subject to temperature scans in public areas. Private vehicle movement is being restricted, with road transport only allowed on alternating days based on the last digit of a vehicle's license plate. Jia County is located approximately 90 km (56 miles) south-southwest of Zhenghou, Henan's provincial capital. The restrictions are apparently in response to concerns over a "second wave" of COVID-19 infection in parts of China.
The measures will prompt significant transport, business, and supply chain disruptions in Jia County, and possible in adjacent areas. Security personnel have deployed to enforce movement restrictions and conduct temperature and identification checks. It remains unclear how long the restrictions will remain in effect. Officials may extend movement and business restrictions to nearby locations in Henan Province in the coming days.
Follow all official instructions. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security personnel. Avoid crowded areas as a precaution. Stock up on essential supplies whenever possible. Confirm travel reservations in Jia County and nearby areas. If possible, postpone travel to the region until authorities lift movement restrictions.
