Authorities have extended transport and gatherings restrictions in Jilin City, Jilin Province, from May 13 following an outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the region. Officials have suspended outbound passenger rail services. Entertainment and tourist venues are closed, and nonessential gatherings are banned. Authorities have set up temperature screenings at the entrances to apartment buildings and are preventing nonresidents from entering. Anyone wishing to leave Jilin City is required to undergo a nucleic acid test and self-quarantine before travel. Similar restrictions began in Shulan County from May 11 before officials extended them to Jilin City. Officials may further extend movement and business restrictions to nearby locations in Jilin Province, and possibly adjacent areas of Heilongjiang Province, in the coming days. Jilin City is located approximately 98 km (61 miles) east of Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province.
The measures will prompt significant transport, business, and supply chain disruptions in Jilin City, Shulan County, and possibly in adjacent areas. Security personnel have deployed to enforce movement restrictions and conduct temperature and identification checks. It remains unclear how long the restrictions will remain in effect; however, officials have reportedly scheduled rail transport service suspensions to continue in Shulan County through at least May 31.
Follow all official instructions. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security personnel. Avoid crowded areas as a precaution. Stock up on essential supplies whenever possible. Confirm travel reservations in Jilin City and nearby areas. If possible, postpone travel to the region until authorities lift movement restrictions.
