Italian flag carrier Alitalia (AZ) will suspend all of its flights serving Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) while reducing the number of flights it operates at Milan Linate (LIN) and Venice Marco Polo (VCE) airports beginning March 9. The airline is taking the measure in response to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) activity in the nation's Lombardy and Venuto regions; the action follows a March 8 government edict placing the entire Lombardy region and 14 provinces elsewhere in the north of Italy on lockdown in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The suspension of Alitalia flights at MXP will begin at about 1040 March 9, immediately after flight 605 arrives in Milan from New York. Service at LIN will be reduced to domestic routes only, with international passengers being required to make connections via Rome. At VCE, the airline will reduce the number of flights connecting with Rome; however, company officials have as yet published no list of specific flights to be canceled between Venice and the Italian capital. The changes in Alitalia service will remain in effect until at least April 3.
According to the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), all airports in the country - including MXP, LIN, and VCE - were open and operating as of 1200 March 8. Nevertheless, ENAC advises travelers to contact their airlines to confirm the status of specific flights.
Check with airlines to confirm flight status if flying via any location in Italy affected by the government's March 8 lockdown edict - especially if booked to fly via Milan or Venice on Alitalia. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
