Warning

Emergency crews are responding to a large fire at a waste disposal site in Siemianowice Slaski, north of Kosice, as of the afternoon May 10. Authorities warn of potentially toxic smoke, although recent toxicological contamination tests do not indicate increased concentrations of compounds that could be dangerous to health and life. As of early afternoon, local authorities have issued an alert recommending that residents close windows and stay indoors in the following areas: Siemianowice Slaskie, Katowice, Dabrowa Gornicza, Sosnowiec, Myslowice, and Bedzin. There are no reports of casualties. Firefighters have deployed to the scene in large numbers.

Smoke from the fire may noticeably worsen air quality in the surrounding area over the short term. Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business will likely affect the vicinity of the blaze until the firefighting operations conclude. Authorities may implement road closures or evacuation orders on short notice depending on the needs of the emergency response.

Avoid the scene of the blaze until the firefighting operations conclude. Allow additional travel time in the area and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the incident site and related disruptions. Follow all instructions from security personnel, including any evacuation orders. Consider remaining indoors if smoke is heavy, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
