Mexican authorities have confirmed the bodies of two Australian and one American tourists near Santo Tomas, Baja California State, as of May 5. The victims reportedly disappeared around April 27 while on a surfing excursion in a coastal area south of Ensenada. Police found all three bodies in a well, each with a gunshot wound to the head. Local officials reported that the victims; families have identified the bodies. Police have arrested at least three suspects and are continuing to investigate the incident; authorities claim the perpetrators may have shot the victims when they resisted an attempted robbery of their vehicle.

Santo Tomas is approximately 40 km (25 miles) south-southeast of Ensenada.

Baja California suffers from a high rate of violent crime, largely due to the presence of drug-trafficking organizations (DTOs) operating near the American border. While much of the violence occurs between rival DTOs, particularly in Tijuana, incidents may also affect those nearby, including tourists.
