Benin: Activists plan protest over cost of living in Cotonou from 07:00 May 11

Unions plan protest over cost of living at Bourse du Travail in Cotonou, Benin, from 07:00 May 11. Authorities are yet to allow event.

Informational

Several unions have called for a protest march in Cotonou on May 11. Participants will gather from 07:00 at the Bourse du Travail. Organizers have not provided the march route. The action is to denounce the high cost of living and the alleged abuse of power by police and the current government administration.

On April 27, union leaders called a protest march from 07:00 at the Bourse du Travail towards Place de l'Etoile Rouge. The march did not go ahead due to police forces preventing participants from gathering and arresting some protesters and union leaders. Union leaders have also denounced the arrest of 74 activists during a meeting at the Bourse du Travail on May 1. Authorities have yet to grant permission for the May 11 gathering.

Heightened security and traffic disruptions are likely along the march route. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, notably if permission is not granted for the protest and participants attempt to assemble.

Avoid all gatherings and the potential march route. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent impacted areas. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any confrontation. Heed the advice of security personnel.
