South Africa: Unionized airport cargo workers of Durban Airport striking indefinitely as of April 24

Unionized cargo workers striking at King Shaka International Airport, Durban, South Africa, as of April 24. Freight disruptions possible.

Informational

Unionized members of the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) have gone on an indefinite strike at Durban's King Shaka International Airport (DUR) as of April 24. They are engaged in a wage dispute with Dube TradePort, the airport's cargo complex operator. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the country's largest union, has offered its support. As of April 24, a localized protest is ongoing; no disruptions to commercial flights have been reported.

Increased security is also likely in the vicinity of further protests that could likely materialize. The action could disrupt airport operations and possibly flight schedules at DUR. Delays are possible for passenger processing procedures. Lingering disruptions are likely following the conclusion of the strike as the airport deals with passenger backlogs and airlines reposition aircraft and crew.

Confirm flights and freight operations scheduled through DUR from April 24. Consider alternative arrangements for critical travel or shipments.
