Pakistan: Farmers' protests likely to continue in Punjab Province through mid-May /update 2

Farmers' protests likely to continue in Punjab Province, Pakistan, through mid-May. Localized disruptions likely at gatherings.

Informational

Unionized farmers will likely continue their ongoing protest campaign across Punjab Province through at least mid-May to denounce low wheat support prices. Organizations such as the Kisan Ittehad (Farmers' Unity) union have organized related gatherings since early April and will hold a demonstration in front of the Punjab Assembly in Lahore April 29. Additionally, the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party has called for sit-in protests on major roads across Punjab Province April 30 but has yet to announce specific details. Protesters could also gather at government buildings, press clubs, public squares, and major thoroughfares in urban centers.

Authorities will likely monitor any protests that materialize and may use force to disperse disruptive gatherings. Demonstrators may march along or block roadways, likely causing localized business and transport disruptions. Clashes between police and protesters could occur.

Avoid all protests due to possible violence. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near any gatherings. If clashes break out nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe, nongovernment building. Heed instructions of security personnel.
