Bulgaria: Environmental activists to protest in Plovdiv, Sofia, and Varvara April 14

Environmental activists to protest near Plovdiv, central Sofia, and Varvara, Bulgaria, on April 14. Heightened security likely.

Informational

Environmental activists plan to protest on the outskirts of Plovdiv, as well as in Sofia and Varvara on April 14. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce proposed amendments to environmental protection legislation. It remains unclear how many participants the events may draw. Gatherings will occur at the following locations and times:

  • Plovdiv: Intersection of Asenovgradsko Shosse Boulevard and Plovdiv Ring Road, 16:00.
  • Sofia: Independence Square (Ploshtad Nezavisimost), 12:00.
  • Varvara: Entrance of Chepino Gorge (Chepinsko Defile), 16:00.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any demonstration areas. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
