Heightened security is likely to remain in place near the Mesmia Intersection in the Kiryat Malakhi area in the coming hours following a shooting incident at a bus stop earlier Feb. 16. An unidentified gunman shot and killed at least two people and wounded an additional four. The assailant was shot and killed at the scene by an armed civilian. The motive for the attack is unclear and there have been no immediate claims of responsibility. There is no known ongoing threat in the area; however, security forces have deployed widely around the impacted site.

Heightened security and business and transport disruptions are likely in the affected area in the coming hours as investigations continue. Disruptions to travel along local routes, including Highway 40 and Highway 3, are possible.

Avoid the incident site until authorities give the all-clear. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.

The attack comes amid Israel's ongoing ground offensive in the Gaza Strip and heightened tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. The threat of shootings, stabbings, and vehicle rammings becomes elevated during periods of conflict. Additionally, multiple militant groups, such as the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda, and Palestinian groups, have called on their followers to target Israelis and their Western allies.
