Authorities in Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte State, are carrying out a search operation around Mossoro Federal Penitentiary as of Feb. 16. More than 300 members of security forces are searching the area after two members of the Red Command (Comando Vermelho, CV), one of Brazil's most powerful drug-trafficking organizations, escaped from the facility. Security within the penitentiary has also been increased, and the federal government has announced additional security deployments from Brasilia to carry out searches. Officials believe the fugitives remain within a 15 km (9 miles) radius of the Mossoro Federal Penitentiary.

Over the coming hours and days, heightened security measures are likely around the facility. Transport disruptions are likely, and identity checks and vehicle searches are possible within the search area. Armed clashes are possible during any attempt by law enforcement officers to apprehend suspects.
