Nigeria: Maritime employees plan to strike at seaports Jan. 9

Union representing maritime and port employees plan to strike at seaports in Nigeria Jan. 9. Port and freight disruptions likely.

Warning

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) announced plans to strike on Jan. 9 and has threatened to shut down the country’s seaports, jetties, as well as gas and oil platforms. The call follows several ultimatums issued to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) over International Oil Companies (IOCs) alleged noncompliance with laws. The amount of members that will participate in the work stoppage remains unclear.

The action will likely cause disruptions to port and freight operations. Participants may stage demonstrations near port facilities, government buildings, and offices of oil and gas and shipping companies; authorities will likely increase security near potential protest sites, such as major ports, as a precaution.

Confirm maritime shipments and port-handling operations scheduled for Jan. 9. Consider alternative shipping methods for critical freight. Avoid all demonstrations that may materialize. Heed instructions from authorities.
