Mexico: Unionized education workers to protest in downtown Mexico City from 15:00 Jan. 18

Education workers to demonstrate in Mexico City, Mexico, from 15:00 Jan. 18; heightened security, transport and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized education workers affiliated with the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion, CNTE) plan to protest in downtown Mexico City Jan. 18. The purpose of the action is to demand higher salaries. Demonstration organizers have called on participating education workers to gather outside the Ministry of Public Education building, located on Calle Republica de Brasil, at 15:00.

Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence to the protest site to monitor the demonstration. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Seek alternative routes to circumvent related transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach destinations. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
