Informational

Dozens of students and residents of Intan Jaya Regency are protesting around the Office of the Governor of Central Papua Province in Nabire as of the morning of Jan. 18. The purpose of the action is to denounce the alleged issuance of a mining permit for Wabu Block - a large gold mine in Intan Jaya Regency - to PT Freeport.

Officials will likely impose further security measures around the protest venue in the coming hours, including deploying additional personnel and setting up barriers. Localized transport disruptions are likely, especially if protesters occupy nearby streets. Some ground travel delays to the Douw Aturure Nabire Airport (NBX) are possible. Clashes or mass arrests may occur if authorities forcibly disperse the action or protesters attempt to breach security barriers.

Avoid the affected area as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Allow additional time for journeys, including to NBX. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Heed all official directives.
