Germany: Activists to conduct protest in Cologne and Berlin Jan. 6 /update 1

Pro-Ukraine activists protest in central Cologne and Berlin, Germany, Jan. 6. Heightened security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Pro-Ukrainian activists plan to hold protests in central Cologne and Berlin on Jan. 6 to express solidarity with Ukraine and draw attention to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. In Cologne, participants will depart from Breslauer Platz at 13:00 before rallying at Rudolfplats at 14:30. Organizers estimate that 1,000 attendees will participate. It is unclear how long the rally may last. Organizers have not published march route details. Activists in Berlin will rally at the German Chancellery (Bundeskanzleramt, 1 Willy-Brandt-Strasse) from 14:00; it is unclear how many participants may attend.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration areas. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Cologne or near the German Chancellery in Berlin during affected hours. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
