Security forces have reportedly used water cannons to disperse protesters at Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla the afternoon of Dec. 4. Activists from the women’s wing of the National People’s Power (NPP) are demonstrating to denounce the rising cost of living. Around a hundred people are participating in the action. There are no confirmed reports of casualties.

Security forces will likely maintain an increased presence in the area in the coming hours. Localized transport disruptions are likely. Further clashes between protesters and police remain possible, particularly if participants are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.
