Germany: Climate activists to demonstrate in Cologne and Saarbrucken Dec. 9 /update 1

Climate activists to protest in central Cologne and at Schillerplatz in Saarbrucken, Germany, Dec. 9. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Climate activists associated with the Fridays for Future movement plan to hold protests in Cologne and Saarbrucken Dec. 9. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce alleged influence by hydrocarbon companies at the COP28 climate conference. Demonstrators in Cologne will gather at Sudermannplatz at 12:00 before marching through the city center to the Uni-Wiese (University Commons). Organizers did not publish specific march route information; police estimate 100-200 people will participate in the action. Protesters in Saarbrucken will rally at Schillerplatz from 15:00; it is unclear how many participants this demonstration may draw.

Authorities will probably increase security near all demonstration sites as a precaution. Localized transport disruptions are possible. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Cologne or near Schillerplatz, Saarbrucken. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
