Martinique: Activists plan to stage daily demonstrations in Fort-de-France Oct. 22-28

Activists to hold daily protests in Fort-de-France, Martinique, Oct. 22-28 to denounce court dismissal of banned insecticide trial.

Warning

Event

Under the banner of the Simmen Matinik Debout movement, environmental activists associated with several organizations plan to stage daily demonstrations at Savane Park (Place de la Savane) in Fort-de-France from Oct. 22-28. The purpose of the protest is to demand justice against the use of chlordecone - a banned insecticide; and denounce an alleged state scandal of a trial dismissal regarding the same. Additionally, the collective movement plans to mobilize a protest march from the Maison des Syndicats beginning at 08:00 on Oct. 28 and march through the city center. It is not immediately clear how many participants the event may draw.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence near any demonstrations that materialize. Localized transportation and business disruptions are likely near the protest rally. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, mainly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible localized disruptions. If clashes occur, immediately leave the vicinity and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Plan for transport and business disruptions around the city center of Fort-de-France. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and the respective embassies.
