Iraq: US officials issue travel warning, evacuate eligible and non-essential personnel in Iraq due to increased security threats as of Oct. 22

US officials issue travel warning, evacuate eligible and non-essential personnel in Iraq due to increased security threats as of Oct. 22.

Warning

Event

The US Department of State issued a travel advisory on Oct. 22 urging American citizens to avoid traveling to Iraq due to increased terrorism risk, kidnapping, armed conflict, and the limited capacity to support US personnel. The travel advisory followed the Oct. 20 ordered evacuation of qualified family members and non-essential personnel from the US Embassy in Baghdad and the US Consulate General in Erbil amid increased security threats against US government personnel and interests likely over the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

A visibly heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the near term in the vicinity of US sites in the country. The evacuation of additional US personnel in Iraq is possible in the coming days. On-site services and document delivery to and from diplomatic missions will likely be disrupted until further notice.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations. Ensure contingency plans account for disruptions to consular support.
