Kenya: Further communal violence possible through late September near Kitui and Tana River county borders

Further communal violence possible through late September after clashes at Kitui-Tana River county border in Kenya. Casualties reported.

Warning

Event

Further clashes are possible through September on the border between the Kitui and Tana River counties amid a bout of communal violence. The recent violence is reportedly related to the destruction of a primary school in Kitui to make way for a police station. The precise location of the violence is unclear; 12 people reportedly died in clashes on Sept. 14.

Heightened security is likely in the area over the coming days. Officials could implement movement restrictions in the impacted area, potentially including checkpoints and curfews if tensions do not abate.

Context

Communal violence over territorial issues, such as land use and water rights, between agricultural-based communities and nomadic pastoral herders is a frequent issue and particularly acute in Eastern Kenya. Eastern and northern regions of the country have experienced recurrent incidents resulting in numerous fatalities. Communal conflict is often worsened by adverse weather conditions, such as drought and flooding, which can result in irregular crop harvests.

Advice

Avoid nonessential travel to areas recently affected by communal violence. If operating in Kitui or Tana River counties, coordinate travel with a trusted local contact. Avoid travel at night. Heed the directives of local officials.
