Italy: Authorities extend Turin Airport closure in Metropolitan City of Turin through 23:59 Sept. 17 due to flight accident /update 1

Authorities extend closure of Turin Airport in Turin, Italy, through 23:59 Sept. 17 after aerobatic plane crash kills one. Flights diverted.

Warning

Event

Authorities have extended the closure of Turin Airport (TRN) for an additional 24 hours through 23:59 Sept. 17. Flights have been either canceled or diverted to nearby airports, including Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY) near Bergamo, Cuneo International Airport (CUF), Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) and Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP). Airport authorities have encouraged passengers to 'contact their airline or travel agency for information on rerouting.'

The closure follows an aircraft crash involving the Frecce Tricolori aerobatics team of the Italian Air Force. The plane crashed in the nearby San Francesco al Campo area of the Metropolitan City of Turin around 17:00 Sept. 16. The incident, which occurred during a scheduled rehearsal for an aerobatics show, killed one child and injured four other people, including the pilot, who ejected from the plane before the crash.

Further flight delays and cancellations are likely at TRN through at least Sept. 18. Flight disruptions may continue even after the airport reopens as staff work to reduce any flight backlogs. Heightened security and road traffic disruptions are also likely around the scene of the crash.

Advice

Avoid the crash site until authorities give the all-clear and vacate the scene. Contact your airline and confirm flights if scheduled to travel via TRN Sept. 17-18. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
