Italy: Authorities close Turin Airport in Metropolitan City of Turin through 23:59 Sept. 16 due to flight accident

Authorities close Turin Airport in Metropolitan City of Turin, Italy, through 23:59 Sept. 16 after aerobatic plane crash kills one person.

Warning

Event

Authorities have announced that Turin Airport (TRN) will be closed through 23:59 Sept. 16 after an aircraft operated by the Frecce Tricolori aerobatics team of the Italian Air Force crashed in the nearby San Francesco al Campo area of the Metropolitan City of Turin shortly before 17:00. The incident, which occurred during a scheduled rehearsal for an aerobatics show, killed one person and injured four other people, including the pilot, who ejected from the plane before the crash. Emergency crews have deployed to the accident site. Airport authorities have encouraged passengers to "contact their airline or travel agency for information on rerouting."

Numerous flight delays and cancellations are likely at TRN through at least late Sept. 16. Flight disruptions may continue even after the airport reopens as staff work to reduce any flight backlogs. Heightened security and road traffic disruptions are also likely around the scene of the crash over the coming hours.

Advice

Avoid the crash site until authorities give the all-clear and vacate the scene. Contact your airline and confirm flights if scheduled to travel via TRN Sept. 16-17. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider making alternative arrangements for time-sensitive travel if necessary. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
