Algeria: Emergency crews still working to extinguish wildfires in Northeastern provinces as of Sept. 17 /update 1

Disruptions due to wildfires are ongoing in Algeria's northeastern provinces as of Sept. 17. Localized evacuations are occurring.

Warning

Event

As of Sept. 17, emergency crews are working to extinguish several wildfires that have broken out in Algeria's northeastern provinces. Several fires are still active in the provinces of Bejaia, Guelma, Jijel, Skikda, and Tizi Ouzou. Authorities have evacuated several neighborhoods affected by the wildfires. There have as yet been no reports of fatalities or property damage; however, responders warn that the blazes are spreading quickly due to strong winds. High temperatures are expected to persist in the affected area through Sept. 18; hot and dry conditions are likely to promote further wildfire growth.

Transport
The wildfires may cause transport disruptions in the affected areas. The status of nearby roads may change over the coming days; authorities could close routes within the wildfire complexes and evacuate additional communities due to fire activity and the need for response operations. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift any evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could cause or exacerbate traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Advice

Heed authorities' instructions, including any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will almost certainly cause increased congestion and delays. Collect essential items - including identification and important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages. Monitor local news sources for further information.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
