Turkiye: Public sector workers to strike nationwide Aug. 16

Public sector workers to stage one-day nationwide strike in Turkiye Aug. 16. Public services disruptions, protests likely.

Warning

Event

Public sector workers affiliated with the Confederation of Public Workers' Unions (Kamu Emekcileri Sendikalari Konfederasyonu, KESK) plan to stage a one-day strike in cities across Turkiye on Aug. 16. The purpose of the action is to demand a new collective bargaining agreement that includes a series of provisions for higher pay and increased benefits.

Unless averted, the work stoppage will likely prompt significant disruptions to a number of public services in the administration, transportation, education, and healthcare sectors, among others. Although labor leaders have announced no specific plans for such gatherings, participating workers will probably stage street protests and pickets as part of their strike. Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence to any such demonstrations that may materialize; officers could use force to disperse any gatherings they deem to be overly disruptive.

Advice

Reconfirm business meetings scheduled for Aug. 16 at government offices and other public sector agencies. Reconfirm appointments at public healthcare facilities, as well as public transportation operating schedules. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize; leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
