Somalia: Clashes reported between militants and security forces in multiple regions, Aug. 12

Clashes between militants and security forces occur in central and south Somalia, Aug. 12. Casualties reported.

Armed clashes involving security forces and suspected Al-Shabaab militants are reported in Middle and Lower Shabelle, and Baay regions, as of Aug. 12. The militants attacked a government base in Balcad, Middle Shabelle region, around 30 km (20 miles) north of Mogadishu. Clashes are also reported in the village of Basra, Lower Shabelle region, to the southwest of Balcad. The clashes are likely ongoing as of late afternoon Aug. 12. In a separate incident, government forces reportedly killed over 20 Al-Shabaab fighters in Bula-Fulay town, Baay region, around 120 km (90 miles) west of the capital. It is unclear whether there are civilian casualties.

Security personnel will almost certainly remain deployed in the areas in the coming hours. Further confrontations between Al-Shabaab fighters and the security forces are likely. Officials could impose restrictive movement measures, including curfews and road closures. Water, power, and food supply disruptions are possible during further engagements.
