Warning

Event

Drone strikes are likely to continue in Moscow through early August. On Aug. 6, Russian forces intercepted a drone on the outskirts of Moscow. Authorities partially diverted air traffic at Vnukovo International Airport (VKO). Incidents in early August also led to temporary air space restrictions in Moscow.

Heightened security and transport and business disruptions will likely continue in response to the threat and incidents.

Context

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strikes in Moscow are the latest in recent weeks. Russian authorities accuse Ukrainian forces of launching the attacks; Kyiv continues to deny responsibility for the incidents. Previous strikes in Moscow were reported on July 24, July 31, and Aug. 1. The July 31 and Aug. 1 strikes hit the IQ Quarter building which houses Russia's Ministry of Digital Development, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Ministry of Economic Development. The Russian Defense Ministry claims that surface-to-air missiles and electronic warfare countermeasures have destroyed a number of UAVs.

Advice

Follow local travel and security advice. Prepare for possible drone strikes: seek shelter if there are reports of potential attacks in the area. Stay away from windows and exterior walls.
