Suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked a convoy traveling along the A7 highway near Koreni, Lamu County, early Aug. 15. Authorities have confirmed that at least three people are missing; casualty figures are unclear. This is the second attack on this stretch of road in August following a similar incident Aug. 1 which left two people dead.

Increased security is likely near the impact site along the A7 highway in the coming hours as authorities pursue the militants. Security operations could lead to localized travel disruptions. Similar Al-Shabaab attacks or clashes between Kenyan security forces and Al-Shabaab militants are possible.

Context

Al-Shabaab carries out regular attacks near the porous border with Somalia as well as in coastal areas of Kenya. The incidents are viewed as retaliation for Kenya's participation in a multinational force fighting Al-Shabaab in Somalia since 2011.
